Marrow: a free WordPress theme for pet food brands

Template page:Marrow, every version

Marrow started as an HTML shop site for pet food brands. We ported it to WordPress by hand as a block theme, and its demo pages and menu come in a separate import file.

Short answer: Download marrow-wordpress.zip, upload it under Appearance → Themes → Add New Theme → Upload Theme, then install the free Formgong plugin and paste your access key under Settings → Formgong. It needs WordPress 6.5 or later and PHP 7.4 or later.

Download marrow-wordpress.zip WordPress demo

  1. Download marrow-wordpress.zip. Don't unzip it.
  2. In WordPress, open Appearance → Themes → Add New Theme → Upload Theme, choose the file, click Install Now, then Activate.
  3. Install the free Formgong plugin (Plugins → Add New, search for "Formgong"). Create a free form at formgong.com/new and copy its access key. It starts with fk_ and is safe to put in a web page. Paste it under Settings → Formgong.
  4. Optional: download marrow-wordpress-pages.xml and import it under Tools → Import → WordPress for the demo pages and menu. Then pick Home under Settings → Reading → A static page.
  5. Send a test message from your site and check that it reaches your Formgong inbox.

What you can change in the Site Editor

Open Appearance → Editor. Besides the header and footer, the theme brings 11 patterns, the pieces its pages are built from: Dialog: Order request, Dialog: Leave a review, Dialog: Write to the kitchen, Home: photo banner, Home: questions, Home: meal finder, Home: hero, Home: recipes, Home: reviews, Home: treats and Home: why raw. The front-page template draws the home page from them, and since they are ordinary blocks you edit, move or delete them there like any others. The header and footer are template parts and change on every page at once.

The forms (order request, review and a message to the kitchen) are Formgong plugin blocks that open as dialogs.

What is in the zip

Everything sits in one folder, marrow/, with 61 files (2.5 MB zipped). theme.json sets the colours, fonts and spacing, templates/ has 404, archive, front-page, index, page, search and single, parts/ has the header and footer, and patterns/ holds the 13 patterns. assets/ carries the CSS and JavaScript, 24 images and the Figtree and Unbounded font files, so nothing loads from Google Fonts.

It needs WordPress 6.5 or later (tested up to 7.1) and PHP 7.4 or later.

Limits on WordPress

The form needs the free Formgong plugin; without it the page has no working form. The demo pages and menu are not in the theme zip. Import marrow-wordpress-pages.xml to get them, or build your own pages from the patterns.

Marrow isn't in the WordPress.org theme directory yet, so you upload the zip instead of searching for it by name.

Questions

Is Marrow free for WordPress?

Yes, under the MIT license. Use it on your own site or a client's, and change anything.

Will it replace my current theme's content?

No. Posts and pages stay as they are. Switching themes changes how they look, and you can switch back under Appearance → Themes.
