Website form to Google Sheets, one row per submission

Formgong team ·

Sign in with Google once and pick a spreadsheet. Every accepted submission becomes a new row, with a column for each field.

Short answer: Open Form settings, click Connect Google Sheets and sign in with Google. Create a spreadsheet or paste the link of one you have. Each accepted submission is added as a row: the time, the page, then one column per field. It works on the free plan, with no Apps Script and no Zapier. Custom column names and order are on Pro and Business.

What the spreadsheet looks like

  • The first two columns are Submitted at and Page URL. Then each form field gets a column named after its name attribute.
  • When a form gets a new field, its column is added at the end. Rows that are already there stay where they were.
  • If you move a column, Formgong finds its header by name and keeps writing under it. A renamed header is treated as new, so the field gets a fresh column at the end.
  • A value that starts with =, +, - or @ is written as text, so a visitor cannot plant a formula in your sheet.
  • Spam is never written to the sheet.

None of the other services in this table puts Google Sheets on its free plan. In Formgong it is a setting on every plan.

Connect a spreadsheet

  1. Open My forms, then your form, then Form settings, and pick Google Sheets.
  2. Click Connect Google Sheets and sign in with Google. Formgong asks for access to your spreadsheets and your email address, nothing else.
  3. Create a spreadsheet, or paste the link of one you already have and name the tab.
  4. Click Append a test row, then send the form from your site. Each accepted submission becomes one row.

A new spreadsheet is named after the form, for example “Formgong — Website contact”. With an existing one, leave the tab name empty to use the first tab, or type a new name to create a tab. Each form writes to one spreadsheet. One Google sign-in serves every form on your account.

Field values, the time and the page are sent to Google and stored in your Google account, under Google's terms. Formgong also keeps the submission in its own inbox in the EU, unless you set the form to keep nothing after delivery.

Custom columns on Pro and Business

On Pro and Business you can choose which fields go into the sheet, rename the headers and set their order. One line per column, the header, a bar and the source:

Date | submitted_at
Name | field:name
Email | field:email
Message | field:message

The sources are submitted_at, page_url, form_name and field: plus a field name. Leave the box empty to go back to automatic columns. Free always writes the time, the page and every field.

Limits and failures

Rows count toward the monthly submission limit and nothing else: 300 on Free, 5,000 on Pro and 25,000 on Business. There is no separate quota for the sheet.

If Google refuses a row, for example because the spreadsheet was deleted or access was removed, Formgong tries 5 times over about 42 minutes. After the last try the owner gets one email about it, at most once a day per form and channel. The submission stays in the inbox, so you can export it as CSV later. Disconnect Google stops new rows on every form and deletes the saved Google token.

Questions

Is website form to Google Sheets free?

Yes. Every plan, Free included, can connect one spreadsheet per form. Rows follow the monthly submission limit, which is 300 on Free.

Do I need Apps Script or Zapier?

No. You sign in with Google in Form settings and pick a spreadsheet. Formgong adds the rows itself.

What happens when I add a field to the form?

Its column is added at the end of the header row. Rows that are already in the sheet do not move.

Can I choose the columns?

On Pro and Business. You can pick fields, rename headers and set their order. Free writes the time, the page and every field.

Can a visitor put a formula in my sheet?

No. A value starting with =, +, - or @ is written as text, so it never runs as a formula.
