Google Forms alternative for your website

Google Forms is free, reliable and connected to Sheets, and for internal surveys it is hard to argue with. As the contact form of a business site it shows its nature: the form looks like Google rather than your brand, file-upload questions require respondents to sign in to a Google account, and email notifications for new responses are off until you enable them per form. We build Formgong, so it is listed first among the replacements.

Short answer: Keep Google Forms for surveys and internal collection; replace it on your website when branding, sign-in walls or silent responses bite. Google's own docs: file-upload questions require responders to sign in to a Google account, and email notifications must be enabled per form under Responses → More. A plain HTML form with Formgong looks like your site, needs no visitor sign-in, and delivers every submission to email and Telegram, 1,000 a month free.

Where Google Forms pinches on a business site

  • It looks like Google. The embed carries Google's card design; your fonts, colours and components stop at the iframe.
  • File uploads demand a Google account. Google's question-types doc says it plainly: to answer a file-upload question, responders need to sign in to a Google account, and uploads land in your Drive. A customer without one is turned away at your own form.
  • Notifications are opt-in and easy to miss. New responses email you only after you turn on Get email notifications for new responses under Responses → More, on each form. Many “Google Form stopped working” stories are just this switch, never flipped.
  • Answers live in Google's UI. Fine for a survey; clumsy as a lead inbox you work from daily, with no spam filtering in front of your sheet.

Where Google Forms is the better choice

Internal forms, event RSVPs, quizzes with grading, anything whose natural home is a spreadsheet: Google Forms is free, unlimited for practical purposes, and the Sheets link is native. If respondents are colleagues already in Google Workspace, the sign-in wall is a feature, not a bug. There is no reason to move those forms anywhere.

The website replacement: your form, a backend behind it

A business site's contact form should look native and work for every visitor. That is your own HTML posting to a backend: take a template or the form generator's markup, point it at Formgong, and you get an inbox, spam filtering, email and Telegram delivery, and Google Sheets sync if the spreadsheet habit should stay. No visitor signs in to anything. If what you miss from Google Forms is Telegram alerts, Google Form to Telegram covers both the add-on route and the replacement.

Replacing an embedded Google Form with your own form

A builder embed is replaced in two steps: a form that matches your site, and a backend that receives it.

  1. Take a form from our templates, or describe what you need to the form generator and download the markup.
  2. Point it at https://formgong.com/submit with your free access key, paste it where the embed was, and send a test.

The form inherits your site's fonts and colours because it is your own HTML, and submissions land in the dashboard inbox, your email and Telegram. The HTML docs cover redirects, autoreplies and the honeypot.

Questions

What is the best Google Forms alternative for a website?

Your own HTML form with a backend. It matches the site's design, works without a Google sign-in, and delivers submissions to email and Telegram; Formgong's free plan takes 1,000 a month and can sync rows to Google Sheets. For survey-style needs, Tally is the closest free builder.

Why does my Google Form require sign-in?

Two settings do it: a file-upload question (Google's docs say responders must sign in to a Google account for those) and the limit-to-one-response option, which needs an account to enforce. Remove both and the form opens to anonymous responders.

Does Google Forms email me new responses?

Only after you enable it per form: Responses → More (⋮) → Get email notifications for new responses. It is off by default, which is the usual cause of silently missed submissions.

Can Google Forms match my website's design?

Within Google's theming: colours, fonts from its list, a header image, inside Google's card layout. The embed stays visibly a Google Form; matching your site's components needs your own markup.
